Design

Design is the intermediary between information and understanding.
Hans Hofmann, abstract-expressionist painter

As a writer, I marvel at the power of words to transmit information. Yet as a designer, I recognize that words can only convey so much. Design is a means of extending and enhancing words’ impact through the strategic use of visual elements. In the case of posters, logos, and other projects containing limited copy, design must do most of the heavy lifting to transform information into understanding.

My work relies primarily on typography and allusions to iconic styles of graphic design, especially British arts and crafts, new typography, Swiss international style, American late modernism, and neo-modernism. I typically try to select typefaces, images, and other graphic elements that reference particular styles or schools of design and that, in turn, evoke the desired associations, thoughts, and feelings in the viewer. When necessary, I rely on my skills as a researcher to learn more about a particular topic in order to better understand how to represent it graphically.
